Import/Export and Manufacturing Choose a packaged food that you enjoy. Get a list of ingredients that are grown (not the chemical additives). For each ingredient, find the major producers around the world. There is a good chance that most of the ingredients are not from Canada! Once you know where the product is made, calculate the distance the ingredients have to travel to be made, and then calculate the distance the product has to travel to arrive in Toronto. Present your findings on a wiki page in a properly organized manner. Your project should include a map showing where the major ingredients are grown and where the product is made, information about the major producers of each ingredient, and calculations showing how far the ingredients have travelled by the time they get to us in Toronto. The work should be properly organized in sections with headings (titles), in paragraphs, and with proper spelling, grammar, and punctuation. You may work alone or in pairs and must have your topic approved by me. I will create the wiki link for you on this page once I approve your product choice. First Nations people have played an important role in Canadian history. It is important that we remember their contributions in shaping the country we live in. Your assignment is to do some research and find a First Nations person that you feel has done something you consider important or valuable. This person can be from our nation’s past or someone who is still living. Once you have chosen someone, you need to do the following:
(1) Create a wiki link on our Social Studies page with a proper title.
(2) Using a variety of sources (books and internet sites – no Wikipedia!), take written notes. Make sure you write down your sources.
(3) Create a presentation on your wiki page for this person. Include information about their life and why they are an important part of Canadian history.
Every student will need to choose a different person. First come, first served!
The world has changed a lot during your lifetime. Imagine how much the world has changed in the last 500 years! Write several paragraphs describing what you think life might have been like 500 years ago before Europeans came to Canada. Not sure what it might have been like? Do some research on the internet. I'll be reading your work to see whether you have some ideas of what Canada was like long before it became Canada. In your writing, include the following information:
- What was life like?
- How did people survive?
- Who lived in the land that became Canada?
- Do you think you would like the life of First Nations people 500 years ago? Why or why not?
